текст: (1) Shortly after the U.S. Constitution was adopted the nation’s first central bank, the Bank of the United States was set up. This bank’s main role was to act as the banker to the Treasury. Tax revenues were deposited at the Bank of the United Slates, and the central government made withdrawals from this bank to pay its bills. This bank also had some supervisory powers over other banks and would make loans to them, but its powers were more limited than those of modern central banks.
(2) The United States found itself without a central bank from 1837 to 1914. During that period, it became apparent that a central bank would be useful for several purposes: supervising bank safety, clearing checks, and, most important at that time, acting as a lender of last resort for the banks, that made up the highly decentralized U.S. banking system.
